Twelve-year-old Jocelyn dreams of becoming every bit as daring as her infamous father, Captain James Hook. Her grandfather, on the other hand, intends to see her starched and pressed into a fine society lady. When she’s sent to Miss Eliza Crumb-Biddlecomb’s Finishing School for Young Ladies, Jocelyn’s hopes of following in her father’s fearsome footsteps are lost in a heap of dance lessons, white gloves, and way too much pink.
So when Jocelyn receives a letter from her father challenging her to avenge his untimely demise at the jaws of the Neverland crocodile, she doesn’t hesitate-here at last is the adventure she has been waiting for. But Jocelyn finds that being a pirate is a bit more difficult than she’d bargained for. As if attempting to defeat the Neverland’s most fearsome beast isn’t enough to deal with, she’s tasked with captaining a crew of woefully untrained pirates, outwitting cannibals wild for English cuisine, and rescuing her best friend from a certain pack of lost children, not to mention that pesky Peter Pan who keeps barging in uninvited (goodreads.com)
I received a digital copy of this book on Netgalley, and wasn’t sure how well I would like it. However, I found out that Hook’s Revenge is a fantastic and hilarious read! I don’t know if I will even be able to explain how much I enjoyed this book. It is author, Heidi Schulz’s debut novel and I can say that she did a fantastic job! I mean how many people have always wondered what happened after Peter Pan defeated Hook? I know I always have and this is a great explanation!
After Jocelyn gets sent away to finishing school (to work on being more ladylike) she receives a letter from her father to avenge his death by killing the horrid Neverland crocodile. She accepts and that is where this amazing adventure begins!
The story itself was spectacular! I thought it was interesting and enjoyable, had a great ending, and moved at a decent pace. I think that the book could be longer than it is and could move a little slower, but we still get enough detail and information to thoroughly enjoy the story. There is a lot of action, a few battles, and we get to go on an adventure through Neverland as Jocelyn and her crew attempt to find the crocodile. Peter also makes an appearance, though I don’t like him very much, and there are also the faeries and the Karnapineas people, who are rather entertaining. Definitely enough to keep you interested from the very first page! It is so incredible to finally be able to read a book about pirates and actually like it!
Jocelyn is the 12-year-old daughter of Captain James Hook, and she is like him in almost every way. She isn’t your typical girl. She loves to get dirty, read adventure books, doesn’t have very good manners, and wants more than anything to go on her own adventure at sea with her father. There are not many (if any) books that follow an amazingly strong female protagonist, who is even a pirate! I just love her character because she is so different.
I also love the supporting characters including Jocelyn’s friend Roger, the lovable pirate Smee, as well as some other pirates whom you learn to love. One-Armed Jack is a hilarious character who only pretends to be one armed and can’t wait to see battle; Jim McCraig, who has a wooden-leg, but not really; Nubbins the cook, who is the only pirate with a real battle wound; and Blind Bart, who is the ship’s lookout, but is unusual because he wears patches over both eyes to look more fierce than a pirate who only wears one. LOL! A great bunch of characters in an amazing story. You will love them all!
I really enjoyed this book, and loved the narrator! If you enjoy reading anything Peter-Pan then you should pick this up as soon as it is released because I guarantee that you will enjoy it as much as I did. It’s an enjoyable read for middle grade readers, adults, and children alike! Can’t wait for the sequel, which comes out next September!
My rating 5/5 stars!
